  1. Support for Availability Groups - Backup from secondary read only replica

We now have 3 SQL servers with all of our production databases in availability groups. We want to use the HA functionality within SQL 2012 to backup from one of the secondary SQL servers instead of the primary. Please Please Please can you add support for this functionality.

My company uses Google Apps for Business for email, so I'm not able to utilize the Backup Pro feature that emails results/logs. Could SSL/TLS support be added?

      Thanks

      • Add Filtering to the "Activity History" pane, including backup type, success/fail/warning, and date-range.

        1. In the “Activity History” pane, please add a function to filter the results displayed in that pane, by type of backup, failed/success/warning, and date-time range: When you are trying to find a specific DIFF backup and you have to filter through +200 5-minute transaction log jobs to get to your last DIFF, it is very annoying to zero-in on the exact job you are looking for (especially when the list keeps refreshing all of the time and throwing you back up to the top of the list).

        • Allow backups in the history of another server be the selection for a restore.

When selecting a file for a restore, you can choose backup history or the file browser. It would be nice if you could pick a file in the backup history of a server, but choose a different server as the target for the restore.

For instance, when you're using the restore wizard.
          - You "right click and press restore on server Dev1.
          - Choose select from backup history
          - Pick the server you want the backup from and the database you want to restore. choose the file or set of files that interest you from the backup history

          • Prevent "Refresh" repositioning the Activity History List

This is an OLD problem that is still VERY annoying in EAP5.

When reviewing the activity history and having scrolled down several pages, along comes "Refresh Connection" and promptly repositions the list at page 1. WHY? I don't want to be on page 1, I want to be on the CURRENT page.

Please, do something to stop this wasting our time and making the product look bad!

My apologies that we’ve been so quiet on this: finding a feasible approach has been tricky (as per Stephen Chambers’ original response).

However, there is now a patch build of SQL Backup Pro UI, that should address this issue.

This has had enough testing that I’m comfortable making it available as a private build. It’s on the FTP site here:

              ftp://support.red-gate.com/patches/SQLBackup/12Mar2014/SQL%20Backup_7.6.0.36_x86_r232390_232784_e72c2d01fb13.exe

Important: this includes a new build of the SQL Backup Pro server components, and whilst this is unchanged from the current shipping version, it’s not been tested; so people should not upgrade their server components with this build.

Please let me know how you get on with this.

              Best regards,

              Colin.

              • Be able to restore multiple databases

I'm astounded that SQL Backup Pro is too stupid to be able to restore multiple databases in one pass. It can *back up* multiple databases as routinely scheduled jobs, and I should be able to *restore* multiple ones as well. Others have noted this limitation for some time now. Writing a script to have to do this is ludicrous, that's why people buy software to ease various tasks with a GUI.

                • Fix the issue with the data file / log file name changing when restoring

When restoring there is a UI bug on the restore step 2 of 4 screen (this existed in previous versions). If you click the ellipses next to the database data files or log files the file browser window opens but annoyingly changes the file name from the database name to name of the first file in the list. I then have to retype the database name and other changes that I want

On my SQL Cluster when I try to view the activity history it can take a very very long time for the activity history to populate. There has to be a way to improve this performance.

                      • use SQL Server native Operators Mailing instead of SQL Backup mailing

It would be great if SQL Backup would use the native SQL Server Operators mailing system instead of his own mailing. We have implemented a mailing strategy with the Operators feature but we can't use it with SQL Backup. I have to put my email directly in SQL Backup!

I think it would be good if SQL Backup just use this mailing system instead of is own. That we, we don't have to repeat everything!

                          • Add FULLIFREQUIRED and COMPRESSION LEVEL 0 to GUI.

Backup options should be available in the GUI when setting up jobs. For TDE database backups we need to use compression level 0. FULLIFREQUIRED is also a good option to use so that new databases automatically get backed up for wildcard transaction log backup jobs. Having to manually edit the job step to enable these options is an unwanted additional configuration step.

                              • Allow Exceptions to Scheduled Jobs

One of the odd problems we're running into is that some of our daily back-up jobs tend to overlap with our monthly archive jobs, making both jobs slow to a crawl because they're trying to access the same databases at the same time.

We have some other software that executes jobs on a scheduled routine and the interface includes an ability to define exception dates so the jobs don't collide.

Some of our database developers have noted the need to suspend a job at certain times, not understanding that it's the other software that can do that; RedGate doesn't have…

The only way I could see to clean out old version was to delete them individually. Can you implement a way to select multiple backup files to perform an action on (e.g. delete) so it doesn’t take so long?

                                  • individual files in the restore wizard should load the logical names from the backup header

When you have to choose to move the files to a new location the logical file names should automatically be filled in becuase they're available and have to be used.

                                    • Retention Policy

Really need a way to handle the rentention of information or at the least a way to delete multiple backup files easily, like with a check box.

                                      • Make it more manageable

Have the ability to select multiple backup files so that you can bulk select in order to make deleting older backups more efficient and less time-consuming.
