How can we improve SQL Backup?

  1. Central Repository

Would like to see one single repository similar to SQL Server Management Studio's Central Management Server. Each client should have the same view of SQL Instances and when you had an instance it should be the same for all the DBAs looking at the client. Real pain to have to add all the SQL instances locally and log in to another machine and have to configure it again. Would also have a central location to keep job history repository and possibly run all the jobs from the repository machine rather than creating SQL Agent jobs on each individual machine.

    • Resultset for RESTORE FILELISTONLY doesn't match v6.5

After installing v7 on a test platform, an application I wrote using the extended stored procedure interface fails. I traced the failure to an attempt to store the resultset returned from:

      INSERT @tblFileList EXEC master..sqlbackup '-sql "RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM DISK=[\\server\share\backup.sqb]" ', @exitCode OUTPUT, @sqlErrorCode OUTPUT

Apparently v6.5 returns LogGroupGUID as varchar(36) while v7 returns UNIQUEIDENTIFIER. Is this a bug or a feature? :-)

          • Learning the Basics: Video and Splashscreen buttons should work

I'm a new customer and just started using SQL Backup. When I first start SQL Backup 9, there are some large buttons to import servers, Add a Server, Watch a Demo Video, and Browse the Splashscreen tips. Neither the Demo Video button nor the Splashscreens buttons seem to do anything beyond closing the popup window.

I'm running Windows 10 and SQL Backup 9.1.4.101

            • Restoring from Backup 7 to Backup 6

Just confirming that the backup file format has not changed from version 6 to version 7. When we went to version 6 I had all the backup filetypes changed to sq6 so we knew which version had created the backup. The Help Contents mentions the version 6 changes but makes no mention of version 7 changes so I am assuming that there is no format change.

              • Separate .log housekeeping from taking backups

If anything on the Windows side of the house prevents deletion of SQL Backup's own .log files, the Backup Service wastes time hunting repeatedly for said file(s) to delete, which can considerably (in my case from 2 seconds to 45 minutes per database) lengthen the execution duration, meaning that the potential data-loss window grows to the length of each run, which is unacceptable behavior.

Though rare, changing a service account can precipitate this run extension. Though rare, SQL Backup's response is to only warn of a deletion failure, and try again next time.

                SEPARATION OF CONCERNS is a well-establish programming…

                  • Reporting of scheduled restores

Whilst the reporting of backups is arguably the most important reporting requirement - many auditors now want to see a demonstration of these backups having been tested. The ability to report on historical scheduled restores would provide this instantly.

I envision this being presented in exactly the same way as the backup reporting, just reporting on the scheduled restores (or in fact any restores handled through the tool).

                    • Allow duplication of scheduled Back-ups or Restores

Many of our scheduled jobs are quite similar, only targeting different instances or backing up a slightly different constellation of Dbs. It would be convenient to be able to Duplicate a scheduled job, giving the new job a different name. Then the few changes would be made in the usual manner, saving a lot of time in building scheduled jobs.

This is a wonderful start because it "Just works". I'd love to see a teensy-weensy 'capacity' bar to inform me of my quota and how much I've used.

                        • Add latest version to the product pages

The product pages on the website should list the latest version available.

Just makes it nice and easy to see what the latest version available is, I rarely look at the redgate site (no need to, redgate backup just works, been using it for 3 years and only recall two failures that needed investigation and none that required redgate support help).

                            • Once you have ever uploaded a backup eliminate the welcome screen from my backups

Well once you log into the hosted stuff it should not show you the getting started screen if you have uploaded a backup ever. I uploaded a backup and then deleted it (testing stuff) and I get the welcome screen.

A screen showing no backups being stored and perhaps even a history of deleted (but can't be recovered backups would be nice)

                                  • FULLIFREQUIRED option does not work wih BACKUP LOG command

It appears that using the FULLIFREQUIERD option in a BACKUP LOG command returns a syntax error. However, the FULLIFREQUIRED option does work with BACKUP LOGS (plural). And BACKUP LOGS does work for a single DB, so we have a viable workaround to this bug. Nevertheless, this should be addressed in a future release.
